Strategic HR Business Partner - Why You Need One On Your Side

After almost 4 years of coaching small businesses and startups, I realized that the majority of my sessions were focused on people (how to hire, onboard, engage, lead) and I wanted to add additional skills to my “toolkit” so I can best serve my clients. That is why I recently completed a certification course through Human Capital Institute to become a Strategic HR Business Partner. 

What is a Strategic HR Business Partner? 

Quantam Workplace states, “A strategic HR partner operates as a: strategic advisor, problem solver, mentor and coach, and independent leader.” 

That is exactly what I am for my clients. I wear those hats so that they don’t have to, at least in the process of getting them to where they need to be, or where their business needs to be. 

So, what does that mean and what does it look like for you? 

As a coach, I help clients focus on the desired business outcomes and create a people strategy that aligns with the business goals and strategy.

Examples of this could be: 

  • Identify new roles and/or existing job openings that must be filled to enable the company to meet its goals

  • Develop a performance management strategy including goal setting, feedback and performance reviews.

  • Coach and train leaders to create an engaged remote or hybrid workforce

Throughout this process, my clients and I follow the Strategic HR Business Partner Framework:

Prepare: Work with clients to understand their goals and strategies

Partner: Consult with clients to understand their challenges and create solutions that impact business outcomes

Perform: Determine effective strategies for measuring HR initiatives

According to the HCI CEO, the program builds: 

“a new strategic skill set characterized by strong financial and business acumen, extraordinary diagnostic and consulting skills, and a level of urgency driven by an unwavering commitment to your business’s strategic outcome.”

The focus is on how to work more strategically to help my clients make the biggest impact. I ask them questions like:

  • What are the top priorities for your business? 

  • What solution(s) can we implement to make the biggest impact?

  • How will we measure success?

All of this can be outlined with a coach like me on your side. As a small business owner myself, I completely understand how important it is to stay on track with your goals, mission, and vision. This is why I’ve made it a point to use my expertise to be the advocate, strategic partner, and coach that will be anyone from your accountability partner to your goal setting mentor.
